As we wind down 2018, we’ll start looking at some of the major films left to wrap up the year. Many of the year’s heavy-hitters have come and gone but there are plenty of highly anticipated movies yet to screen in theaters.
Here is what the Japanese movie industry has left for 2018 and our ranking of the 10 most anticipated movies:
Code Blue: The Movie
Fresh off of a highly anticipated third season that saw the original cast reunite after seven years, Code Blue: The Movie continues the series’ on-going stories with a feature film due in theaters July 27. The film stars Aragaki Yui, Toda Erika, Yamashita Tomohisa, Higa Manami, Arioka Daiki, and Asari Yosuke.
Killing for the Prosecutions
The best-selling 2013 mystery thriller get the big screen adaptation starring Kimura Takuya and Ninomiya Kazunari. As two of the most popular personalities in Japan, these two actors make this film an almost certain lock to secure a Top 10 spot in the box office by year’s end. Killing for the Prosecutions is in theaters August 24.
Hibiki
Winner of the 10th Annual Manga Taisho Award in 2017, Hibiki get the big screen treatment starring Kitagawa Keiko and Oguri Shun. Hirate Yurina plays the story’s high school protagonist. Hibiki hits theaters September 14.
Million Dollar Man
This children’s novel arrives in theaters with a number of famous faces starring including Takeru Satoh, Fujiwara Tatsuya, Kitamura Kazuki, and Sawajiri Erika. Million Dollar Man arrives in theaters October 19.
Sunny
This 2011 South Korean live action film gets a Japanese feature film update starring a number of popular actresses and personalities including Shinohara Ryoko, Hirose Suzu, and Watanabe Naomi. The film promises to be full of nostalgic 90’s J-Pop songs. Sunny is in theaters August 31.
Dragon Ball Super: The Movie
Dragon Ball is back in theaters with this highly-anticipated latest feature. The film, titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly in the U.S. will see the return of the fan favorite baddie. Dragon Ball Super: The Movie arrives in Japan December 14 with a January 2019 release for the U.S.
Nisekoi
Komi Naoshi’s popular romantic comedy manga arrives in theaters starring Nakajima Kento and Nakajo Ayami. The film arrives in theaters December 21.
Eating Women
Numerous famous actresses headline this romantic dramedy including Kyōko Koizumi, Erika Sawajiri, Atsuko Maeda, Alice Hirose, Yu Yamada, and Mitsu Dan. Eating Women arrives in theaters September 21.
Gintama 2
Warner Bros. goes all out with their manga and anime adaptations (i.e. Ruroni Kenshin) and this one is no exception. Gintama 2 stars Oguri Shun, Suda Masaki, Okada Masaki, and Nagasawa Masami in this highly anticipated sequel. Gintama 2 arrives in theaters August 17.
The Traveling Cat Chronicles
Two of Japan’s popular “next generation” actors star in this children’s novel adaptation. Fukushi Sota and Takahata Mitsuki headline this movie which arrives in theaters October 26.
