Jason Bourne is back!
Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has had a surprise change of plans with their Bourne franchise and is currently negotiating with Damon and director Paul Greengrass to re-team for another film. Greengrass directed Damon in The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.
Universal has also tagged July 16, 2016 as the release date for the film. That date had previously been reserved for a different Bourne sequel, one starring Jeremy Renner in the lead. That film, a follow up to The Bourne Legacy will remain in development for release at another time.
Clearly, Renner’s Marvel commitments seem to be coming into play here. While filming on Avengers: Age of Ultron is wrapped, there’s still the worldwide press tour next summer and one has to think some involvement in another Marvel movie filming later next year?
Either that, or Universal really isn’t feeling Renner as the lead in the Bourne franchise right now. The Bourne Legacy had the lowest domestic gross of the four Bourne movies and the second lowest worldwide gross besting only the first Bourne movie.
Regardless, Damon and Greengrass’ shaky-cam action sequences are back!
