Disney’s live-action adaptation of their animated film library continues with Aladdin. The studio released a sneak peek of the first trailer for the film on Thursday which stars Will Smith as The Genie.
The upcoming Disney film is directed by Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie, and stars Egyptian-born Canadian actor Mena Massoud (from the Amazon series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) as Aladdin, a charismatic street urchin who frees a magical Genie (Will Smith) from a lamp and is then granted three wishes. Aladdin uses his first wish to turn himself into an extravagant prince in order to win the heart of a beautiful princess named Jasmine played by Power Rangers star Naomi Scott.
Co-written by Ritchie and John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), the film also stars Marwan Kenzari as sorcerer Jafar; Navid Negahban as Princess Jasmine’s father, The Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Princess Jasmine’s best friend Dalia, and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders.
Oscar-winning “Aladdin” composer Alan Menken created the score for the film which includes new recordings of the original songs and two brand-new songs written by Menken and Oscar-winning La La Land and The Greatest Showman songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
Aladdin is currently scheduled to hit theaters May 24, 2019.
