Disney Sets Release Dates, Title and Cast For Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Movies


A whole lot of Star Wars news dropped today at Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting. CEO Bob Iger confirmed the release dates for two upcoming movies and made directing and casting announcements.

First, Star Wars: Episode VIII. Iger announced that Rian Johnson will write and direct the eighth movie in the Star Wars saga. Johnson wrote and directed Looper starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Episode VIII will arrive in theaters May 26, 2017.

Iger also announced the official title for the first standalone Star Wars movie called Rogue One.

Gareth Edwards will write and direct that movie while Felicity Jones was confirmed as the first cast member to officially sign on to star. Edwards previously directed Godzilla while Jones starred in The Theory of Everything and appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 last year.

Rogue One will arrive in theaters December 16, 2016.
