Cumber-bitches rejoice! Marvel has cast Benedict Cumberbatch to star as the title character in their upcoming Doctor Strange movie.
Though Marvel has not released an official statement, Deadline reports that Cumberbatch, the star of Sherlock and the upcoming The Imitation Game has been cast in the role.
In addition to The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch will also return to theaters in December as the voice of Smaug in the final Hobbit movie.
According to Deadline, Marvel never offered a deal to Joaquin Phoenix who had been in contention for the role around Comic-Con time. The studio then quickly got into talks with other actors to play Doctor Strange in a solo movie.
Marvel has not set a release date for the film, but given the casting news, we can likely expect the film to arrive in theaters on July 8, 2016, one of the many dates the studio and Disney have staked out for upcoming releases.
