Marvel Hints at Black Widow Solo Film, Expanded Role in ‘Avengers’ Sequel

We’ve known for quite some time now that Marvel and specifically studio president Kevin Feige has been making a push for more prominent roles for the company’s female superheroes.

In an interview with Total Film via Comic Book Movie, Feige confirmed that the studio has very big future plans for Russian spy/S.H.I.E.L.D.  Agent Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

While speaking on Widow’s role in the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Fiege said Black Widow will have a “very big” role in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Feige added that he and others have been toying with the idea of giving the character her own solo movie.

“We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she came to be in that film,” Feige said of Joss Whedon’s upcoming Avengers sequel. “The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”

Feige also adds that the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (in theaters April 4) will continue to further the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a major way that will impact The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Marvel’s Phase Three slate of films.

“We wanted to change the dynamic of the cinematic universe with this film. We wanted Cap and really the entire cinematic universe to be very different at the end of Winter Soldier than it is at the beginning. Therefore when we meet the Avengers at the top of Age of Ultron, it’s a very different landscape than we left them at the end of the film. Partially that’s because we love the rhythm that the comic books have developed – each of the characters appear in their runs, occasionally get together for a big event of crossover series, they part again, and then come back together again.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a potential Black Widow solo movie and the studio’s push to spotlight female characters continues to keep that hope alive.

Would you like to see a Black Widow solo movie? What would you like to see included in such a movie?
