100 Years of Movies in 100 Days – Day 100 – State of Play (2009)

I'm sorry Ben, but The Gladiator would totally kick Daredevil's ass!

At long last the final day of the journey is here. I’ll post a separate post that looks back on the 100 Day journey in more detail and will add the final video recap tomorrow. But for today, I couldn’t find a better movie to wrap up this journey with than the highly underrated State of Play. And while yes, I does star Rachel McAdams, it’s one of those movies that is so well cast, well-written and executed with impeccable precision.

Russell Crowe delivers an excellent performance as a veteran Washington Globe reporter who jumps on the story of corrupt military contractors when his friend’s aid is suspiciously killed. Ben Affleck does an admirable job with the role of the Congressman and Jason Bateman steals the show as the bisexual PR exec who puts everything together. Jeff Daniels is also brilliantly evil, even though I’ll always see him as Harry from Dumb and Dumber. And then there is Helen Mirren, who, when I first went in to watch this movie in the theaters, was the one guarantee (along with Rachel, of course) of who I knew was going to deliver a strong performance. Mirren never fails. Just go watch her in the Prime Suspect series. Flawless.

Either this is Rachel's "serious face" or Russell and Ben are still debating Gladiator vs. Daredevil.

I compare this movie to this year’s The Ghost Writer, another criminally underrated and underaprreciated thriller starring Pierce Brosnan and Ewan McGregor.

Now that the journey is over, I’m going to take a couple days off from watching movies. Well, outside of work anyway. No DVDs for the week. Except maybe Scott Pilgrim again. I’m due for another viewing of Knives Chau. 🙂

The best thing about Scott Pilgrim.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who stopped by this blog during the past 100 days, whether it was on a regular basis or just every once in a while. It’s been a truly extraordinary journey that I won’t forget. The movies certainly blurred together, so I’m glad I have this blog to refresh my memory. This is by no means the end of this blog. In fact, it’s just the beginning. While I won’t be posting on a daily basis like I’ve been doing for this project, I will still be adding articles on a regular basis.

Coming up soon will be a Documentary DVD round-up, plus my thoughts on Deathly Hallows, The Next Three Days and Faster to name a few. And of course, you can always follow my feed on Fandango as I’ll still be posting up on there.

Well, I guess that’s it. Nothing more to say except, “Cut!”
