When I watched this movie for the first time a couple years ago, it was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen. After today’s second viewing, I still like it, but it wasn’t as funny. Bringing Up Baby features a rat-ta-tat-tat machine gun dialogue exchange between Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn as they transport a leopard to Aunt Elizabeth Random’s house in Conneticut.
If you don’t like slapstick comedy, then stay away from this movie because a majority of the humor comes from Hepburn’s klutzy charcter constantly destroying people’s possessions. That and the super-fast dialogue exchange between the characters. You think they talk fast in His Girl Friday, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
All in all though, I still enjoyed this second viewing and am really excited for this weekend’s series of movies. Tomorrow brings Wizard of Oz and Monday will be Pinocchio. (The Grapes of Wrath is my back-up for that day since I recently viewed Pinocchio. The aforementioned His Girl Friday is the third string for that day.) Citizen Kane and Casablanca follow after that. To say I’m in the classic movie sweet spot is an understatement. Looking forward to traveling to the land of Oz tomorrow!
