Top 9 Most Anticipated Movies of 2018

A new year brings a new crop of movies and as such a new list of the most anticipated movies hitting theaters.

We’ve waited a while for the votes to start adding up, but the folks over at Ranker have compiled an extensive list of films that will debut in cinemas in 2018.

Here is a just a sample of the most anticipated movies on their list.

Deadpool 2 – May 18

Fox’s breakout 2016 hit is back for more tongue-in-cheek humor and R-rated action. Following Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox, Mr. Pool will be integrated into Disney’s on-going Marvel Cinematic Universe. If this (fake) synopsis from Fox is any indication, Deadpool 2 looks to pick up the humor and tone right from it’s first film:

After surviving a near fatal knee boarding accident , a disfigured guidance counselor (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Poughkeepsie’s most celebrated French Bulldog breeder while also learning to cope with an open relationship. Searching to regain his passion for life, as well as a new stuffed unicorn, Wade must battle ninjas, tight assed metal men, and babysit a group stereotypical side characters as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and creative outlets for his very open-minded sex life. He manages to find a new lust for being a do-gooder, a sparkly Hello Kitty backpack, all while earning the coveted coffee mug title of World’s Best 4th Wall Breaking Superhero.

Avengers: Infinity War – May 4

Speaking of Disney and their superhero universe, 2018 brings the culmination of more than a decade of Marvel movies and “phases” with Infinity War. Disney’s ominous synopsis for the film suggests that characters that audiences have come to know will fall at the hands (literally) of Marvel mega-villain Thanos:

The Avengers and their allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe.

The Incredibles 2 – June 15

It’s been 14 years since The Incredibles were introduced to movie-goers and in 2018, the superhero family makes their much anticipated return. There’s a lot going on in the sequel which will pick up right after the events at the end of the first film:

Taking place immediately after the first film, the end of which introduces The Underminer (John Ratzenberger), the Parr family struggles to maintain normal lives while helen Parr (Holly Hunter) also known as Elastigirl is out fighting crime. Meanwhile, Helen’s husband Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson) also known as Mr. Incredible remains at home watching their children Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner), and discovering baby Jack-Jack’s secret powers. However, they, along with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) will have to battle a new villain with a sinister plot.

Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom – June 22

The dino-franchise reboot moves forward with Lost Kingdom which will find Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event when the island’s long dormant volcano roars back to life.

Black Panther – February 16

Marvel’s ever-expanding cinematic universe launches another standalone film, this time with Chadwick Boseman starring as Black Panther. Boseman looks to have a busy Gal Gadot-like year first fronting this standalone and then starring as part of the massive ensemble of Infinity War later this year.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to Wakanda. But when two enemies conspire to bring down the kingdom, T’Challa must team up, as the Black Panther, with CIA agent Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) and members of the Dora Milaje—Wakanda’s special forces—to prevent a world war.

Solo: A Star Wars Movie – May 25

It’s going to be a busy month in May with not only the releases of the top two most anticipated movies (so far) but also this Han Solo spin-off prequel origin movie. Beautiful Creatures star Alden Ehrenreich stars as young Solo in the film while Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke will portray Qi’Ra. Donald Glover will portray young Lando Calrissian.

During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future copilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix – November 2

Fox’s long-running X-Men franchise got a strong shot in the arm with last year’s Logan and looks to continue that momentum with Dark Phoenix. The early synopsis has fans of the franchise wondering which character(s) will meet their demise in the film. Oscar-nominated producer Simon Kinberg makes his directorial debut.

Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly return in the title roles with Michael Douglas reprising his role as Dr. Hank Pym. Expect a major push for this movie at San Diego Comic Con as well.

Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang tries to balance his home life as a father with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, when Hope van Dyne and Hank Pym present him with a new mission to bring to light secrets from their past, requiring him to team up with van Dyne as the new Wasp.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 – November 21

Disney Animation looks to have a bit of a nostalgia-fest first with the return of The Incredibles and later in 2018, the return of Wreck-It Ralph. Six years have flown by in a flash since the first Wreck-It Ralph movie hit theaters and in the sequel, Ralph and Vanellope will take on a whole new adventure that will once again include plenty of well-known video game character cameo appearances.

Taking place six years after the events of the first film, the story will center on Ralph’s adventures in the Internet data space when a Wi-Fi router gets plugged into the arcade as he must find a replacement part to fix Sugar Rush. Along the way, Ralph and his best friend Vanellope von Schweetz encounter new customs, worlds, and characters, such as the trendy algorithm Yesss and the Disney Princess lineup.
