Fox Moves Ahead with ‘Guys and Dolls’ Movie

Nathan Detroit is coming to the big screen.

Fox has hired British stage director-producer Michael Grandage to direct its remake of the 1955 musical Guys and Dolls.

John Goldwyn is producing the picture with Working Title. His grandfather Samuel Goldwyn produced the 1955 movie, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz with Frank Sinatra starring as Nathan Detroit and Marlon Brando as fellow gambler Sky Masterson.

The movie was based on the 1950 Broadway musical, which won the Tony for Best Musical that year. The musical was based on Damon Runyon’s stories The Idyll of Miss Sarah Browne and Blood Pressure, published in the 1930s. Quite the thread of succession there.

The property is familiar territory for Grandage who directed a 2005 stage version of Guys and Dolls in London. That rendition starred Ewan McGregor as Sky Masterson and Douglas Hodge as Nathan Detroit.

No release date was given for the film. The announcement was first reported by Deadline.
