Time to take a look back at the movies that arrived in theaters in February. But first, a look at the top five releases for the month:

  1. The LEGO Batman Movie – $139 million domestic, $233 million worldwide
  2. Fifty Shades Darker – $107 million domestic, $333 million worldwide
  3. John Wick: Chapter Two – $79.4 million domestic, $130 million worldwide
  4. Get Out – $57 million domestic
  5. The Great Wall – $38.6 million domestic, $308.5 million worldwide

The Hits: Two immediate take-aways from February are that the LEGO franchise is still doing well although the Batman spin-off did see a $16 million opening weekend drop-off from the more wider-appealing The LEGO Movie. Also, the Fifty Shades franchise is still very much alive, especially overseas and that bodes well for it’s upcoming third and final chapter, Fifty Shades Free in 2018.

The Big Surprise: Without question, the big surprise of the month was Get Out. Aided by strong reviews and solid word of mouth, the film shattered all box office expectations and is currently on pace to finish March just under $100 million.

The Big Dud: We already hinted that The Great Wall was not going to go over very well in the States (irony and a $38.6 million cume be damned). Warner Bros. heavily touted Fist Fight came in with a lot of expectations and failed to deliver. The Ice Cube/Charlie Day comedy opened at $12 million and has since totaled a shade over $25 million.

It could also be said that Paramount’s Rings struggled with $27 million domestically, but the recharged franchise got a boost from international markets for a $75 million worldwide total for the month. If the franchise is to continue, look for a better marketing strategy among other things.

Finally, let’s take a look at the top five movies for 2017 so far according to box office totals.
